IELTS Exam Format: Pen & Paper vs Computer-Delivered IELTS

If you are planning to study, work, or migrate abroad, choosing the right IELTS exam format is an important decision.

Currently, the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is available in two formats:

Paper-Based IELTS (Pen & Paper)

Computer-Delivered IELTS (CBT)

Both formats assess the same four modules:

Listening

Reading

Writing

Speaking

The syllabus, difficulty level, and scoring system remain the same in both formats. The only difference is the method of answering the test.

What is Computer-Delivered IELTS (CBT)?

In the Computer-Delivered IELTS exam:

  • You read passages on a computer screen
  • You type your answers using a keyboard
  • Listening, Reading, and Writing modules are completed on the computer
  • Speaking test is conducted face-to-face with an examiner

Advantages of Computer IELTS

✔ Ideal for students with unclear handwriting
✔ Faster results (usually within 3–5 days)
✔ Easy editing in Writing module
✔ Flexible test dates available
✔ Time-saving for urgent university or visa deadlines

Computer IELTS is recommended for candidates who are comfortable using computers and typing.

Advantages of Paper-Based IELTS

  1.  Traditional exam format familiar to many Indian students
  2.  Suitable for those comfortable with writing by hand
  3.  No typing required

Result Time

Paper-based IELTS results usually take up to 13 days, which may be a concern if you have urgent admission or visa deadlines.

What is Paper-Based IELTS?

In the Paper-Based IELTS exam:

  • You receive a printed question paper
  • You write answers on an answer sheet using a pen or pencil
  • Listening, Reading, and Writing are conducted on paper
  • Speaking test remains face-to-face with an examiner
